When Robert Lewandowski put the ball in the net to give Poland a crucial 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, his eyes welled up with tears as he did so. Years of waiting for him to leave his mark on the biggest stage of them all were finally fulfilled. He failed to score in Russia four years ago and missed an important penalty against Mexico in the opening game in Qatar, but he took advantage of a defensive blunder in the dying seconds to secure all three points. In Group C, Poland now leads with four points, one game before Argentina takes on Mexico. However, they had to work extremely hard to get there. Only Wojciech Szczesny’s outstanding performance, which included a penalty save, prevented Saudi Arabia from scoring. Saudi Arabia created chance after chance. The goalkeeper for Juventus was in top form as he made one of the great double saves and contributed to his team’s first goal.

Szczesny passed it wide to Matty Cash, who then expertly fed Robert Lewandowski in the box after a one-two. Although he came close to scoring, the Barcelona player kept the play going by pulling the ball back for Piotr Zielinkski, who sent the ball into the net’s roof. With seven goals and seven assists, he has now contributed to 14 goals this season, but this one was by far the biggest. The goal was wholly unexpected given that Saudi Arabia had been dominating and that Poland was finding it difficult to apply pressure. The vocal support was stunned by a move they then put together, but Saudi Arabia was able to reenter the contest. After a VAR review, Krystian Bielik awkwardly made contact with Saleh Al Shehri, and the referee gestured to the area as the fans exploded. Szczesny made a spectacular save on a shot from Salem Al Dawsari before the former Arsenal goalkeeper miraculously rose to tip Mohammed Al Burayk’s follow-up attempt over the bar.

After a goalmouth scramble in the second half, Feras Al Brikan was played in on the left but shot over before Mohammed Kano squandered another good opportunity. This was the same Saudi Arabia that hurried and hastened Argentina, once more displaying their power. Poland ought to have increased their lead, though. Before Lewandowski missed with his right foot from close range and deflected the ball onto the post with his left knee, Arkadiusz Milik stooped to head a cross from the left onto the crossbar. That opportunity was definitely his to take advantage of, but Poland’s best player would make his imprint on the largest platform. Lewandowski pounced to slid the ball past the advancing keeper after Al Malki mishandled the ball on the edge of his own box. Just days after missing that important penalty against Mexico, tears welled up in his eyes as he scored his first goal in a World Cup match. He missed a significant one-on-one opportunity and could have scored again, but he was still happy with the 2-0 victory.
