Mitchell Duke’s outstanding first-half header gave Australia a 1-0 victory over Tunisia to kickstart their World Cup campaign. The Socceroos knew that another loss would send their World Cup home with one game remaining after losing their tournament opener to France on Tuesday. Graham Arnold’s team came out fighting and forced Tunisia to play the majority of the opening exchanges inside their own half. In the 23rd minute, Australia’s pressure paid off when Craig Goodwin’s left-wing cross deflected and found Duke. Duke then readjusted brilliantly to guide a glancing header past the helpless Aymen Dahmen and inside the far post.

While Australia now sits second in Group D with three points ahead of France’s match against Denmark on Saturday afternoon, Tunisia is at the bottom of the standings with just one point and zero goals despite making improvements after the break. The victory over Tunisia, Australia’s third at a World Cup and their first since defeating Serbia in 2010, came just in time to keep their hopes of making it to the round of 16 for just the second time alive. In Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Denmark, Tunisia had displayed impressive play, but the African team struggled to contain Australia in the opening 30 minutes as they were repeatedly exposed down their right flank.
