It is a great time to be a Brighton & Hove Albion supporter. The club has been doing really well on the pitch and a lot of their players’ efforts have been duly noticed. They have been praised heavily by supporters and pundits, and rightly so! The style of football Brighton plays under Roberto De Zerbi has been attractive, to say the least, with the club not afraid to take on any opponent. Their front-foot attacking style of play has been difficult for many teams to deal with.

Among the Brighton players who have been praised for their development in the recent past, talented young striker Evan Ferguson stands out. The teenager is just 19 years of age but has already been turning heads with his performance. His goal in the 1-1 draw against Fulham at the weekend was a special one. With that strike, Ferguson became the first teenager since Wayne Rooney in 2005 to score ten goals in the Premier League during a calendar year.

Evan Ferguson on the record

“Yes, not bad, not bad. Especially as a kid looking up to him and watching Wayne Rooney play so that’s not bad news,” Ferguson, quoted by the club’s website, said. Speaking about how Rooney was kind of a role model, the 19-year-old stated, “A little bit, yes. Obviously just seeing the way he was and seeing his documentary, how young he was and what he did at that age, it shows it’s not impossible, you know what I mean? People think it’s impossible but it’s just a part of the game.”

However, it was not all easy for the youngster. Ferguson was in the middle of a massive spotlight after scoring a phenomenal hat-trick against Newcastle United last month. But, an illness disrupted his momentum after that watershed moment. “It was very frustrating for me, especially coming off the back of that. Having a bit of an injury, then coming back and then having an illness, but there’s not really a lot you can do about it. The illness took me out for a little bit and it was just trying to get your feet back and get your lungs going again. I just woke up one morning and didn’t feel great and I had it for a few days, nearly a week or so. But I’m all right now,” he elaborated.

‘You’d rather be good than bad’

Nonetheless, the hat-trick did not go unnoticed with plenty of supporters and former players like Alan Shearer showered praise on him. “I think it’s good. You’d rather be good than bad! So it’s not a bad thing, but it’s all just talk, isn’t it? You can only do what you do on the pitch and they can only comment on what you do on the pitch. So whether you do good or bad, I’m sure they’ll say,” the striker said.

He added: “I think it’s different if it’s Ireland. I think they’re calling out for someone so they try to put their dependence on someone, and I think it happened to end up being me. But we’ve got a good team and a young team and we’re only going to get better as a group because we’re young players. Hopefully in a few years we’ll be back to getting into tournaments and qualifying.”
