Erling Haaland responds to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi comparisons

The in-form Norwegian striker has been a revelation over the past two seasons.

At the tender age of 20, Erling Haaland has transformed into one of the most lethal strikers across Europe. The Borussia Dortmund centre forward has been enjoying a dream couple of seasons, scoring goals for fun. The Norwegian possesses all the attributes of a world class striker. He is good with both his feet, has got a thumping header in him, can make clever off-the-ball runs, and is very good at hold-up or link-up play in the final third.

After joining German giants Dortmund from RB Salzburg in January 2020, Haaland has been unstoppable at the top level. The tall center-forward has netted 33 goals in 31 games across all competitions this season. He has been prolific in both domestic and European competitions. In the Champions League, he became the quickest player to reach 20 goals.

His incredible form has expectedly invited comparisons with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With Messi at 34 and Ronaldo at 36, Haaland has been considered has the next big thing in football alongside PSG’s Kylian Mbappe. However, he refused to compare himself with the Argentine and Portuguese superstars.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet Dagbladet, the Dortmund striker insisted that he still has a long way to go. “I think only of myself, to improve my game every day,” Haaland said. “I don’t need to talk about Messi and Ronaldo, probably the best players in history. I still need a lot to reach them.”

His stupendous form has attracted a lot of attention, with the best clubs in Europe eager to sign him in the near future. At 20 years, Haaland can only get better. Possessing all the necessary skill-set in his kitty, the Norwegian center-forward has the ability to rule the sport in coming years.
