A blockbuster weekend of the Premier League came to an end on Sunday with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur narrowly earning three points. There were two massive fixtures on Saturday, Arsenal against defending champions Manchester City, and Liverpool against European champions Chelsea. While the Blues displayed a tremendous effort to claim a point with a man down, Arsenal was completely and utterly taken apart by City. A 5-0 defeat at the Etihad is an embarrassing situation for a club of Arsenal’s stature. At the end of the week, Spurs were on the top of the table followed by West Ham United and Manchester United.

The Liverpool-Chelsea game ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield. The European champions started the game on a strong foot and managed to get the goal through a world-class header by German midfielder Kai Havertz from a corner. The flight of the ball deceived the entire Liverpool defence and goalkeeper Allison and it nestled in the back of the net. It looked like the score would be 1-0 until halftime. However, right on the stroke, there was a VAR incident. Reece James’ hand had touched the ball on the goal line, preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The Chelsea full-back was sent off as a result with Liverpool being awarded a penalty. Mo Salah made no mistake from the spot.

The second half saw an absolutely masterful defensive performance from the Blues as they held onto that one point with everything they had. The hosts simply could not breach the stubborn defence and the match eventually ended 1-1.

ARSENAL’S DAY OF SHAME

Manchester City added to Arsenal woes as they beat the Gunners 5-0 at the Etihad. Arsenal have now lost three matches in three, making it their worst start to a season since 1967. Mikel Arteta will be wary of his job at the moment as it is hanging by a thread. The Gunners were not the favorites going into the match but a defeat by this margin is also unacceptable for a club with the stature of Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur were up against newly-promoted Watford in a home match. A Heung-Min Son goal in the 42nd minute was enough for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to seal the three points. Spurs are the only team to have kept a 100% record in the league so far. Thus, they are in first place on the table. Watford showed great character to keep the score at 1-0. They even managed to get a couple of good opportunities to level the scores.

Manchester United had to deal with a very tricky test at the Molineux against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils created fewer chances than the hosts, but a lethal strike by Mason Greenwood in the 81st minute was enough to see them over the line. David De Gea had made an incredible double-save a few moments earlier to keep the score at 0-0. The match also saw the full Premier League debuts of new signings Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
