Liverpool made a complete overhaul of their midfield in the summer transfer window. A lot of players in that department left the Reds, while some exciting new players arrived at Anfield. Overall, Liverpool made four signings in the central part of the pitch – Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. With a lot of questions being asked about how well Liverpool will adapt to the massive change, the team responded brilliantly on the pitch.

The Reds looked like a team on a mission from the start, as they picked up important points on a consistent basis. They have been good both in domestic and European competitions. One of the reasons behind Liverpool’s form this campaign is down to the summer signings adapting to the new surroundings quite well. Dominik Szoboszlai is one of those players who quickly became a hit among the supporters due to his abilities on the ball and the work rate without it.

Why did Dominik Szoboszlai decide to join Liverpool?

Szoboszlai has opened up about what went through his mind when Liverpool came looking for his signing when he was playing with RB Leipzig in the summer. “To be honest, I was thinking, ‘Is it the right timing?’ This was the only thing I was thinking of. Not [if it was] the right choice, the right timing. Am I ready to come to the Premier League and play for Liverpool? And I said to myself, ‘Always when something big comes you never know you are ready, [so] you have to try.’ And if I don’t try, it will always be in my mind why I didn’t go. So I just said, ‘Let’s do it, let’s see, I’m going to be ready’,” Szoboszlai, quoted on the club’s website, told Football Focus.

The 23-year-old then spoke about his new surroundings and how it felt to settle in with the squad. “It’s crazy. When I came, [in] the first days I was like, ‘Am I on PlayStation or something?!’ It was great to know them and how they are, not only from the television. To play with them is even better,” he explained.

After completing the transfer, Szoboszlai took the famous No.8 jersey which was previously worn by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Speaking about comparisons to the former English midfielder’s game, the Hungarian said, “I don’t want to be him, I want to be myself. But of course if they put a paper in front of me now and say you’re going to have the same impact or the same career here in Liverpool, I’m going to sign it directly!”

The club did a massive rebuild in the middle of the park. Recalling it, Szoboszlai did not consider it as a hard thing to follow, instead he looked at it as a tool of motivation. “A lot of players left from midfield and I didn’t look at this like, ‘Ah, it’s going to be hard.’ No, let’s just do it. It’s a motivation, let’s show [what we can do]. We are good football players, so if we know each other, with time it’s going to be even better,” he explained.
