Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in September 2020 and recently completed a year at Anfield. The Portuguese striker enjoyed a successful first season with the club scoring 13 times in 30 appearances. However, he wasn’t a regular starter for Jurgen Klopp’s side in his debut season as he managed to start only 12 Premier League games in the 2020-21 campaign. Meanwhile, this time around, the 24-year-old has already made seven appearances with six starts to his name and netted three times in the League.

During the last few seasons, Roberto Firmino was the central striker in Klopp’s side with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane on either side of the Brazilian. The trio formed a superb partnership and ran havoc against the opposition defence. Meanwhile this season, Jota has edged himself ahead of Firmino to get his name in the starting XI alongside Salah and Mane.

The new Liverpool trio of Mane, Jota and Salah have been in scintillating form, scoring 17 goals in all competitions so far. Salah has already netted six League goals and Mane has four to his name.

“They are world-class players and I am very happy to be able to play with them and to get results with them,” said Jota of Liverpool’s frontline via the Liverpool Echo.

“I feel like we are still developing our connections on the field and I think we can improve on that but that obviously develops with game-time and facing different opponents together. But hopefully, along with Bobby Firmino, as a front four we can get a lot of goals this season if we do the right things.”

Klopp is an outstanding manager: Jota

Jota also attributes Liverpool’s strong bonding as a team to Klopp’s ability to manage players and maintain good relationships with the players.

“I think he is an outstanding manager in terms of the relationship that he can establish with the players, especially with those that don’t play as often as the others. That is one of his key characteristics and I am just happy to be able to work with him.”

Liverpool’s previous match at Anfield against Liverpool turned out to be a thriller as both teams played some eye-catching football to settle for a 2-2 draw in front of more than 50,000 fans. The Reds are known to have one of the most vociferous fan bases in the world. However last season, because of the coronavirus, no or a limited number of spectators were allowed inside the stadium and that did have an impact on their results.

The Reds struggled in an empty stadium losing six successive top-flight home games for the first time in their history.

“I remember how hard it was to play at Anfield being an opposition player,” Jota said.

“Then last year I wasn’t able to play a lot at Anfield with the fans supporting us inside a full stadium like I am doing this season. It feels almost like I am playing in a different club from last season because we couldn’t have that support and I believe that our fans are extremely important for us.”
