Italian club AS Roma have confirmed the signing of promising young English international Tammy Abraham from Chelsea. The 23-year-old joins the Italian side from the Premier League giants for a fee of €40 million, according to asroma.com. “The overall transfer agreement also included a number of performance-related clauses, based on the achievements of both the player and the club. Chelsea will also retain the right to a percentage of any future transfer fee involving the striker. Abraham, meanwhile, has put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract with the club that runs until 30 June 2026,” a statement on the Italian club’s website added.

Tammy Abraham will wear the No.9 shirt for his new club, which is managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. Abraham had won the Champions League earlier this year with the Blues. However, the 23-year-old forward lost his place in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager. Before Tuchel’s arrival midway through last season, Abraham used to get regular game time. “You can sense when a club really wants you – and Roma made their interest clear immediately,” said Abraham.

“Roma is a club that deserves to be fighting for titles and trophies. I’ve had the experience of winning major trophies and I want to be in those competitions again – so I want to help this team to achieve that and get to the level where Roma should be. It’s a massive honour to be the No. 9 at this club and I just can’t wait to get started and to help the team.”

Tammy Abraham is Roma’s fourth signing

After joining the Chelsea academy at Under-8 level, Abraham went on to progress all the way to the first team. He scored 30 goals in 82 games in all competitions for the team. He has also enjoyed loan spells at Swindon Town, Swansea City and Aston Villa. He made his England debut in 2017, scoring his first goal for his country two years later in a match against Montenegro.

“Despite still being very young, with a huge amount of potential to keep improving, Tammy has already played more than 200 games in his career and scored over 100 goals – and won a number of major trophies too,“ said Tiago Pinto, Roma’s General Manager. “Choosing to leave the Premier League, and the club he grew up at, demonstrates very clearly just how much he believes in this opportunity to develop his own game and show what he can do at Roma.

“Bringing in players that have such a hunger and desire to play for our club is hugely important in helping to build the identity and sense of belonging that is a fundamental part of our overall vision for this team.”

Notably, Tammy Abraham becomes the club’s fourth signing of the summer, following in the footsteps of Rui Patricio, Eldor Shomurodov and Matias Vina.

Chelsea director’s farewell message

Meanwhile, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has penned a farewell message to Tammy Abraham. “Tammy will always be welcomed back at Stamford Bridge as one of our own,” the Chelsea director said. “We have all enjoyed watching his progress through our Academy and into the first-team squad, and are grateful for his contribution to our successes at senior and youth level.

“His many goals in a Chelsea shirt and, of course, his part in our Champions League triumph last season will never be forgotten. I’m sure all Chelsea supporters will join me in wishing Tammy a long and successful career.”
