Manchester United’s injury situation worsened, with reliable midfielder Casemiro becoming the latest in a long list of players to get injured. The Brazilian had missed the recent games for the club owing to an injury and made his return on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup. However, he was not able to complete the game and was taken off at half time. Initially it was believed to be a tactical switch but after the match, the manager revealed the reason behind the substitution.

How long will Casemiro be out?

On the back of the demoralising 3-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was asked why Casemiro did not re-emerge for the second half. The manager, in his post-match media duties, quoted on the club’s website, replied, “He was injured. Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off.” Ten Hag was asked if Casemiro will be out until the international fixtures later this month. The manager said, “I can’t give an answer on that [now]. We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out.”

The attention then shifted to the poor outing by the Red Devils in the 3-0 defeat to the same side they had beaten last year in the competition’s final to lift the trophy. After the match, ten Hag, while speaking to media outlets such as MUTV, BBC and Sky Sports, spoke about the importance of sticking together during this difficult period. “It is not good enough. We know that. We were in the game and in a couple of minutes we gave the game away,” he said.

He added: “That’s below our standards and we know that. We have to take responsibility for this. You only get your confidence when you take responsibility and you fight and you are winning and dictating the crowd. When you do that, you get results and from there you build your own confidence. Confidence is something that is in your own hands and that is individual but of course you have to do it as a team. You have to stick together.”

You have to stick together: Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag said it is important for everyone to take responsibility, however, he does not want to single anyone out. “You have to stick together but you have to be disciplined and you have to do it. And [have] togetherness. Everyone has to take responsibility, be accountable and cooperate – that’s the key word. You hope that the players prove themselves but we are in this together. Don’t point to one individual. It’s about us. We have had good times. Now we have very bad times, but we do it together. We win together and now we are losing together,” he explained.

The Dutchman is also confident that he can turn Manchester United’s season around, as he referred to past examples as proof for it. “I understand that when the results are not there, it is a logical process to question [the manager]. But I am confident I can do it. With all my clubs I have done it and also last year I did it here as well. In this moment, we are in a bad place. I take responsibility for it. I see it as a challenge,” he added.
