Levante held Barcelona to a 3-3 draw at home to dent a blow to their title hopes on Tuesday. Barcelona scored two goals in the first half courtesy of strikes from Lionel Messi and Pedri Gonzalez. The home side scored two quick goals in the second half to level the score at 2-2. Ousmane Dembele restored the lead for Barcelona only to be canceled out by Sergio Leon’s strike. The Catalan’s missed the chance to go to the top of the table above leaders Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand and one point lead.

Lionel Messi scored his 29th goal of the League campaign to give Barcelona the lead in the 25th minute. Left-back Jordi Alba’s cross found Messi inside the penalt box.

The Argentine striker scored of a superb left-footed first time low volley from just inside the penalty box. Less than ten minutes after the goal, Pedri Gonzalez extended the lead for the away side.

Messi’s through ball picked up Dembele’s run inside the penalty area. Pedri tapped in the Frenchman’s cut back from close range.

Levante pulled one back in the 57th minute through Gonzalo Melero’s header. Miramon’s cross from the right flank was headed in by Melero from close range after getting past his marker Sergio Roberto.

The home side got the second goal within two minutes of the first. Morales played a one-two with Marti before firing in a first time volley past Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

Frenetic ending

Ronald Koeman’s side retained the lead through Dembele in the 64th minute. The Frenchman smashed the ball into the top corner of Levante goal from inside the penalty area. Levante leveled the score at 3-3 in the 83rd minute.

Sergio Leon flicked in Garcia Aranda’s low cross from the left side and that was all she wrote.

Sergio Roberto, who came in for central defender Araujo in the second half proved to be the difference in the match. The versatile Spanish midfielder who can also play at the wing-back struggled in the central defence.

The draw ensured Levante’s survival in the Spanish top flight. On the other hand, the win helped Barcelona in to second spot for time being, but their chances of winning a 27th La Liga title looks slim.

They have to depend on the results of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid who have a game in hand. Real are just one point behind Barcelona.
