'Barcelona never had the intention of buying referees'- Joan Laporta opens up about recent allegations

Joan Laporta has finally taken to the press conference on Tuesday claiming all the rumors as false and that the rumors are only pointed toward his club to spoil the name and reputation.

Barcelona’s President Joan Laporta has finally opened up about Barcelona’s link with the referee scandal in the past few years. There has been a lot of fuss in the last few weeks claiming that the club has been buying referees in the past to win the matches and titles.

So Laporta has finally taken to the press conference on Tuesday claiming all the rumors as false and that the rumors are only pointed toward his club to spoil their name and reputation. He denied all the claims of buying referees for the past few years.

Laporta said, “Let it be clear Barca have never bought referees and Barca have never had the intention of buying referees, absolutely never. The forcefulness of the facts contradicts those who try to change the story. We are doing well again — nothing is chance.”

Some reports say that Barcelona paid an estimated amount of 6.5 million euros from 2001 to 2018 to a company of Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira who was the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) in Spain.

Joan Laporta talks about LaLiga President Javier Tebas:

He also criticized LaLiga Javier Tebas for the LaLiga President has only been trying to spoil his reputation and that Tebas has also started a campaign for ruining his reputation adding, “There is a campaign to damage Barça’s interests. It is a campaign aimed at controlling the club. La Liga does not accept that Barça did not sign the contract with CVC.”

Joan Laporta also talked about Xavi’s success in the club and the club’s future plans:

Laporta also talked about how keen he is to offer Xavi a contract extension as his current deal expiring on June 2024. He added, “He’s a man who doesn’t stretch his arm out beyond his sleeve, he doesn’t ask for crazy things and he understands the club’s situation, I have considered Xavi’s renewal.”

He talked about on what grounds Barcelona needs to improve saying, “Barca will have to sign a full-back, certainly, and a centre-back if there is a good opportunity. Surely a striker, yes, but somebody will have to leave. We have a good midfield and we also have a youth academy with players who will make it to the first team.”
