Atletico Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano: Twitter reacts as Rayo Vallecano salvage a point at Metropolitano

Ramadel Falcao scored in stoppage time as Rayo Vallecano pulled off a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

On Matchday 10, Atletico Madrid hosted Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann were Atletico’s front-line starters. The midfield was led by De Paul, Witsel, Kondogbia, and Lemar. In a 4-4-2 system, Molina, Savic, Gimenez, and Reinildo were Atletico’s starting back four.

With regard to defense, Rayo Vallecano got things going with Garcia, Cantena, Mumin, and Balliu. With Falcao as their lone striker, they used a 4-2-3-1 formation with Ciss, Valentin, Garcia, Pozo, and Palazon in the midfield.

Griezmann got the game underway, and Atletico looked to break quickly down their right courtesy of Molina steaming down the wing and trying to feed De Paul but was blocked. Against the run of play, Rayo had a shot on target as Palazon sneaks through the defense and took a shot outside the box only to be saved. After Atletico got in a few passes, Griezmann nailed an early cross into the box, and Morata capitalized on the chance to take the hosts ahead.

Misery hit Atletico as Thomas Lemar was substituted and replaced after a muscle injury by Yannick Carrasco. Rayo began to press hard at the same moment, which made things difficult for the home team. As Atletico Madrid regained control of the game in the second half, things started to look up for them again, and Griezmann’s ball went into the box only for Morata to put it away towards the far post.

Falcao’s stoppage-time penalty earns Rayo a 1-1 draw

After the 60th minute, Atletico made a double change taking off the goal scorer for Matheus Cunha and Axel Witsel for Angel Correa. Rayo made their own change, bringing in Sergio Camello for Oscar Valentin. In the meantime, De Paul steals the ball after a deflection and passes it to Correa, who creates an instant impact and tries to nail it across the goal, but Dimitrievski denies him.

Saul Niguez fouls Fran Garcia with a late challenge almost into the 89th minute. VAR was implemented to check for a potential penalty, one of which was awarded to Rayo. In order to equalize for the visitors, Falcao accepted responsibility and drilled the ball through the middle. Atletico squandered the opportunity to tie Barcelona and are now third with 22 points, while Rayo Vallecano are placed in the top half with 12 points.
