The UEFA Champions League match between Antwerp and Porto will take place at Bosuilstadion on Thursday at 12:30 am IST.
Royal Antwerp will try to secure their first-ever points in the Champions League group stage when they host Porto at Bosuilstadion on Thursday. Currently at the bottom of Group H, the Belgian team is struggling, while their Portuguese counterparts are in second place with three points from two matches. After a historic victory over Greek side AEK Athens in the qualifying rounds, Antwerp faced a tough test in their first Champions League group match against Barcelona, suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
Although La Liga champions Barcelona are favored to top the group, Porto’s European track record suggests they should aim for the second spot, having reached the knockout rounds in five of their last six appearances. Porto enjoyed a fantastic start to their European campaign, with a 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday one, featuring a brace from Galeno and a strike from Mehdi Taremi. However, they couldn’t replicate that result in their second group game against Barcelona, where Ferran Torres’s strike in first-half stoppage time decided the closely contested match.
Since the loss to Barcelona, Porto has rebounded with consecutive wins, narrowly defeating Portimonense in a league match and then winning 2-0 against fourth-tier Vilar de Perdizes in a Taca de Portugal tie. Porto’s defense has been solid, as they have not conceded more than one goal in any of their last 11 competitive matches. Although they are set to face Antwerp for the first time in a competitive match, the two-time European champions have previously won their last three away games against Belgian opposition, beating Genk 3-0 in August 2010 and prevailing over Club Brugge in 2016 and 2022.
Antwerp’s probable starting lineup: Butez, Bataille, Alderweireld, Coulibaly, Wijndal, Vermeeren, Yusuf, Ekkelenkamp, Muja, Balikwisha, Janssen
Porto’s probable starting lineup: Costa, Mario, Carmo, Cardoso, Sanchez, Pepe, Varela, Nico, Galeno, Taremi, Evanilson
