Algeria will take on Uganda in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Oran Olympic stadium on Saturday night. The Desert Warriors are heading into the match after failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA world Cup courtesy of losing the playoffs to Cameroon. Meanwhile Uganda will be aiming to return to the continental showpiece after picking up eight points from 18 to finish third in Group B of the qualifiers back in March 2021. As for Algeria, they endured a disappointing AFCON campaign earlier this year, finishing at the bottom of their group after going winless in their three games.

And then, the Desert Warriors lost the World Cup play-offs to Cameroon on away goals. The two-legged tie ended 2-2. Algeria won the first leg 1-0 but the second leg at Stade Mustapha produced one of the most thrilling World Cup play-off matches in history. Cameroon leveled the tie through Choupo-Moting’s early goal but then, Ahmed Touba’ 118th-minute goal put the hosts ahead. Just when it looked like Algeria were heading into Qatar 2022, Toko Ekambi’s 124th minute goal broke the Algerian hearts and earned Cameroon a place in the global event. Djamel Belmadi’s side has now failed to win four of their last five games across all competitions, picking up one draw and losing three.
Uganda are heading into the tie on the back of a 4-2 defeat against Uzbekistan last time out. Prior to that, Milun Sredojevic’s side saw off Tajikistan on penalties after 29-year-old Emmanuel Okwi and Alisher Dzhalilov scored for either side to force the share of spoils. Meanwhile the Cranes have managed just one win in their last six competitive games on the road. Uganda missed out on 2022 AFCON and would be aiming to begin their return to continental tournament on a high.
