The final day of the Premier League season ended with a blast, as fans belonging to teams fighting for positions from top to the bottom were in for a major treat. The incredible final day of action saw three big winners – Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United. After several twists and turns, City produced a stunning late comeback to astonishingly overcome a 0-2 deficit and beat Aston Villa 3-2 at home on Sunday. Liverpool themselves conjured a brilliant fightback to register a come-from-behind victory but City’s win means they have to settle for the second spot. Let us look at how the Premier League table looks following Sunday’s action-packed encounter:

Manchester City deny Liverpool quadruple

For long periods on Sunday, Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa seemed to have done a huge favour to Liverpool. They led Pep Guardiola’s side by a two-goal margin with only 20-odd minutes left. After Matty Cash put the visitors in front in the first half, former Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho doubled their advantage in the 69th minute. Liverpool were also being held for a draw at this point. However, the feeling was that the Reds could go in front anytime, which could have helped them win the Premier League title for a second time under Jurgen Klopp.

As it turned out, Pep Guardiola’s inspired substitution of Ilkay Gundogan proved to be the difference. He scored twice in a matter of five minutes and Rodri also scored one in between those two strikes. This remarkable 5-minute period allowed Manchester City to win their second successive league title. Thereby, Liverpool’s late victory over Wolves proved to be inconsequential in the end. Sunday’s results mean Liverpool’s quadruple dreams are over but they can still get their hands on a treble if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Tottenham Hotspur seal Champions League football

On Sunday, Tottenham knew their task at hand. They must avoid defeat against already-relegated Norwich City to seal a top four spot. They went one better in trouncing the hosts 5-0 to seal the coveted fourth place. As a result, Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Everton proved to be insignificant. They have to wait another season to secure Champions League football. In the end, Tottenham have 71 points, compared to Arsenal’s 69.

Meanwhile, Manchester United ended their dismal season with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. With new manager Erik ten Hag watching from the stands, United produced another poor performance, highlighting the massive rebuild in store for the Dutchman this summer. Despite the loss, Europa League football is sealed for the Red Devils. West Ham United’s defeat away at Brighton means the Reds hold on to the sixth spot. Still the 58 points they managed this campaign is their lowest points tally in a Premier League season.

Leeds United survive, Burnely relegated

Just like the top, the bottom of the table was also filled with incredible last-gasp action. Leeds were leading Brentford 1-0 through a second-half penalty from Raphinha but Sergi Canos equalised in the 78th minute to level the score. However, Canos, who got booked for taking his shirt off during the celebration of his goal, got a second yellow couple of minutes later to reduce Brentford to 10-man. In the fourth minute of injury time, Jack Harrison scored the winner for Leeds. The three points combined with Burnley’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United mean Leeds survived a thrilling relegation battle.
