The UEFA Champions League match between AEK Athens and Royal Antwerp will take place at OPEL Arena on Thursday at 12:30 am IST.
In order to reverse a one-goal disadvantage and extend their journey in the Champions League, AEK Athens will host Royal Antwerp at Agia Sophia Stadium for the second leg of their qualifying playoff match on Wednesday. Last week, despite playing with 10 players for the final 40 minutes, Royal Antwerp secured a 1-0 victory in front of their home fans. Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen scored the opening goal for Antwerp 16 minutes into the game. Despite losing Jelle Bataille to a red card early in the second half, Antwerp managed to hold their ground and prevent AEK Athens from scoring.
AEK Athens had the majority of possession (64%) and attempted 23 shots on goal, but only four were on target in the match against Antwerp. This trend continued in their Greek Super League opener, where they drew 1-1 with Panserraikos. AEK dominated possession again (82%) but struggled to convert their chances. Mark van Bommel’s Royal Antwerp, led by a former European Cup winner with Barcelona, find themselves on the brink of history, just one game away from a significant achievement in the Champions League. Prior to the knockouts rounds of the 2023-24 season, Antwerp had minimal top-level experience, but now they are in a position to make a mark.
Royal Antwerp’s recent away record has been unimpressive, with no wins in their last four competitive away matches, including two losses and two draws. This comes after a run of five consecutive wins on away grounds, all accompanied by clean sheets. This crucial match on Wednesday will be only Royal Antwerp’s second competitive game in Greece, the previous one resulting in a 2-1 defeat to Olympiacos in the 2021-22 Europa League group stage, a game in which Jelle Bataille was once again shown a red card.
AEK Athens’s probable starting lineup: Athanasiadis, Sidibe, Vida, Moukoudi, Mohammadi, Jonsson, Pineda, Amrabat, Mantalos, Gacinovic, Van Weert
Royal Antwerp’s probable starting lineup: Butez, De Laet, Alderweireld, Coulibaly, Vines, Keita, Vermeeren, Ondrejka, Ekkelenkamp, Balikwisha, Janssen
