Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, the 13th episode of the anime series was postponed from its original air date of December 29. As a result, the third volume of the Blu-ray Disc and DVD home video release was also delayed from February 22 to March 24. The anime’s production committee cited concerns about the spread of COVID-19 within the studio, and the health and safety of the staff involved in the production.

Despite these setbacks, the anime premiered worldwide on Netflix in July 2022 and on television in Japan. However, the fifth episode of the series was delayed for two weeks from its original airing date of August 3 to August 17, due to an outbreak of COVID-19 within the studio. This resulted in the production committee deciding to delay the release of episodes 8 and beyond, citing the rapid increase in COVID-19 infections in Atelier Pontdarc and other studios involved in the anime’s production.

In response to this delay, the production team re-aired episodes 3-6 throughout September. The anime then restarted its airing from the first episode on October 6, after taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the staff involved in the production. Despite these challenges, the anime has received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike and continues to captivate viewers with its engaging storyline and stunning visuals.

The anime was produced by Atelier Pontdarc, under the direction of Shigeki Kawai, and the series screenplays were overseen and written by Kenta Ihara (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious, Full Dive, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Mieruko-chan). The figures are being created by Kazuhiro Ta (Natsu no Arashi!, Negima!, Pani Poni Dash!). The opening theme music is “story” by Mayu Maeshima. The “Ichibanboshi Sonority” ending tune is sung by Yuka Iguchi.

According to the manga’s licensee, Yen Press, the story goes as described below:

After being in a coma for seventeen years, Takafumi’s uncle mysteriously wakes up. However, Takafumi soon realizes that his uncle is not the same person he once knew. He has become obsessed with video games and claims to have been transported to another world as a heroic guardian while he was comatose. As if that wasn’t enough, Takafumi now has to share a room with his magical uncle and bring him up to speed on two decades of history, including modern technology, anime trends, and the outcome of the infamous ’90s console war. It’s a challenging task, but Takafumi is determined to help his uncle adjust to the world that has drastically changed during his absence.

The manga, which Hotondoshindeiru started in June 2018, has been published on Kadokawa’s Comic Walker website ever since.
