The preceding chapter opens with a flashback to a scene fifteen years ago when the mother of the main character (MC) returns some borrowed money to the mother of the Nari (Mari). Mari is merely behaving elegantly, but she has no favorable feelings for her.

When little Minwoo sees Mari cradling little Nari in her arms, he wants to take a hand. Mari does, but he eventually releases her hand, remarking on how delicate it is. While Mari is in the kitchen thinking about what he said about her hands, he teases little Nari.
Now we observe Mari and MC’s mom having a conversation: Mari appears to have been living it up in America, according to MC’s mom. After that, she casually mentions that she should have been more careful about leaving Minwoo alone and notes that Mari seemed to have behaved similarly after she abandoned her Korean home and girls.
After Mari asks Minwoo why she came back, she tells her she can’t continue living with him. After MC’s mom explains that she is staying with him because he is her son, she reveals that she and MC’s ex-boyfriend had a rocky relationship.
After that, Mari holds her hand in a manner similar to MC’s in the flashback and tells her that she should be regretting leaving her family, adding that she doesn’t know why she’s bluffing. However, she later admits that she lacks the confidence to confront MC and that it’s too late for her to attempt a return at this point. MC’s mother gently removes her hand and departs.
