This chapter begins with the Imperial Father questioning Cong’er about the Jubilee present he brought. Cong’er chuckles and adds that he had planned to offer the Imperial Father a gift of the highest quality and design, but then he remembered the Emperor’s instructions.
Cong’er argues that since the land and the people are the King’s rightful property, Cong’er has nothing to give to the King. When Cong’er stops talking and doesn’t offer a gift, the Imperial Father waits a moment longer.
The Imperial Father explodes in anger and declares that while everyone else brought him gifts for his centennial jubilee, only his son showed up empty-handed. Cong’er begins to perspire heavily and promptly responds that the Imperial Father is mistaken since he didn’t give any gifts to him out of a sense that doing so would be too basic and antiquated of an expression of his profound affection for him.
To better convey his feelings, Cong’er claims he sought guidance from a great master. He then begins dancing erratically in front of everyone, much to their embarrassment. The Imperial Father, similarly humiliated, quickly puts an end to Cong’er. He takes the present and invites Cong to return with his instructor the next time they meet.
The Crown Prince explains to the Imperial Father that his brother’s dance style may be ragged around the edges, but that his brother’s heart is in the right place and he, too, deserves a reward. While the Imperial Father explains that no prize could possibly match the crown prince’s performance, he nonetheless insists on rewarding Cong lest he feel unappreciated.
The Imperial Father explodes with rage, declaring that he cannot reward anyone in the kingdom—including Cong’er—because no honor could possibly compare to his own. The Imperial Father tells the Crown Prince to recognize his position, but the Crown Prince persists.
