Halo Infinite has released a surprise playlist of classic Halo 3 BTB maps:

Three Halo 3 map remakes—Last Resort, Valhalla, and Rat’s Nest—can be found in the Squad Battle playlist. Community manager Snickerdoodle stated in the announcement blog, “If you find Big Team Battle too chaotic at 12v12 but 4v4 just isn’t enough, then let us introduce you to the new Squad Battle playlist.”

Similar to the BTB of old, Squad Battle matches 8v8 players in a mix of Slayer and Objective modes on user-created maps that are conducive to both infantry and vehicular combat. This should be a trip down memory lane for anyone who has played earlier games, especially Halo 3.

The size of the teams in Halo Infinite’s BTB increased from the eight-vs-eight lobbies that were present in all previous Halo games to 12-vs-12. This is something that Snickerdoodle also mentioned. This modification was one of several made to the mode in Infinite that was met with a muted response when it was first released. Enthusiasm for a more traditional BTB experience in the title is probably the main driver of interest in this new playlist.

Infinite’s Forge tool’s power has been wielded by 343 for several seasons at this point. When new official map additions take some time to be released, it has a ton of community and developer-made Forge maps added to satisfy the constant need for content. A few weeks into season four, a new version of the well-liked Halo 5: Guardians Map Plaza debuted in both matchmaking and the HCS map pool.

Squad Battle is currently available in matchmaking in the featured playlist section of Halo Infinite for players looking for a classic Halo experience. Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Slayer across Last Resort, Rat’s Nest, and Valhalla are just a few of the modes currently available in the game list. The community members who remade the versions of Valhalla and Last Resort also gave them new names, becoming Kusini Bay and Vallaheim, respectively.
