Even though the fourth season of Halo Infinite is still a month away, 343 Industries has finally begun to inform players of what to anticipate from the upcoming content drop. That officially began today with the announcement that a cherished game type is finally making its way to Infinite. The team confirmed that Infection is coming to Halo Infinite with the release of season four on June 20 during a discussion on season four that was hosted earlier today in the official Halo Discord server.

Since the original community-made mode was formally adopted in Halo 3, it will have been 19 months since Halo Infinite’s initial release date, making it the longest time since that point that a Halo game has gone without Infection. If you need more information about Season 4 of Infinite will include the iconic Halo mode, then read carefully, and don’t forget to share with your friends.

Season 4 of Infinite will include the iconic Halo mode:

Following the events in the multiplayer narrative of season three, players had already begun to predict the arrival of Infection. Players helped Hieu Dinh infiltrate an old ONI facility buried beneath the multiplayer training academy in the narrative, which follows the Lone Wolves duo introduced in season two. There, it is made known that the Banished AI Iratus—a foe who was also introduced in season two—is capable of “possessing” a set of dormant Spartan armor.

This announcement confirms the theories that this would represent the new Infection style in Infinite. The holographic display covering the Alpha Infected’s armor is still modeled after Iratus iconography in the key art that was revealed as part of today’s reveal. The plot of season four will probably center on the Spartans of the Academy and the Lone Wolves cooperating to try and thwart this new threat posed by corrupting AI.

A source of debate in the community has been Infection’s conspicuous absence from Infinite. Its inclusion now is seen by many as being too little, too late, as many responses to the announcement on Reddit indicate. The party modes in Halo Infinite suffered without Infection because of how crucial it has grown to be to the custom game scene in Halo over the past ten years. Even without the convenience of Infection, Forge creators still found workarounds to adapt well-known party games like Duck Hunt to Infinite using other game modes.

The public may still be won over by 343 Industries with a successful launch and other notable additions like Career Rank in season four. But for now, the delay in arriving has tempered the community’s enthusiasm for Infection’s return. It’s unclear how many infections will contribute to the story going forward, given that previous game-type additions like Last Spartan Standing have connections to the ongoing plot. On June 20, Season 4 of Halo Infinite and Infection will be made available on all platforms.
