On Wednesday, the General Commission for Audiovisual Media of Saudi Arabia declared that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XVI has not been sanctioned for distribution in the country by the government’s Ministry of Media. While the agency did not clarify why the game was banned, it stated that Square Enix refused to make the required adjustments.

According to the ESRB’s rating, Final Fantasy XVI has been classified as “Mature” due to its high levels of violence, such as depictions of blood splatter, maiming, dismemberment, impaling, and torture, as well as sexually suggestive content, including references to brothels, a scene of a character caressing and straddling a man in bed, and incidental and character dialogue related to prostitution.

Why was the game banned in Suadi Arabia?

Games that do not meet the standards set by the agency for media are often prohibited from release in Saudi Arabia by the Ministry of Media (formerly known as the Ministry of Culture and Information).

The highly anticipated game is set to debut on June 22 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive until the end of the year. Although an earlier trailer had hinted at a PC release, subsequent trailers and the game’s official website do not mention a PC version.

The development of Final Fantasy XVI is being carried out by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit III division, with Naoki Yoshida, known for his work on Final Fantasy XIV, serving as the game’s producer. Meanwhile, Hiroshi Takai, also known for his work on Final Fantasy XIV, is directing the game.
