Even though Counter-Strike 2 hasn’t even launched yet, the streams and broadcasts from the beta access period have given fans numerous chances to get a sneak peek at what the storied first-person shooter franchise has in store for the future. For a series with such a long history, certain elements—whether positive or negative—have endured for years, and the game’s active Reddit community recently learned that one particularly annoying detail may very well remain in the new game.

The MVP award for the round win is typically given to the bomb defuser on the CT side rather than the player who received the majority of kills, in this case, four, according to a Reddit thread started by user /u/ImThour. It appears from the screenshot taken from the CS2 beta that the contentious scoring system will continue to be used in the most recent installment of the series.

Counter-Strike’s unusual point-scoring decision still irritates players ten years later:

Even though the “game mode is called defuse, not kill,” as one of the users pointed out, context is frequently crucial in these situations, and its evaluation goes beyond the game’s MVP system’s basic abilities. It is less of an accomplishment than obtaining the kills that came before if the round is quickly won by the defenders with plenty of time and survivors nearby to get the defuse. On the other hand, if a clutch or a ninja defuse were necessary to win the round, then defusing the bomb is unquestionably the more significant achievement.

Starcraft 2 is a game I’ve played competitively (master) and followed ever since it came out, but I’ve never played it at a high level, so I can’t comment on comparisons between it and Battlefield 1. Which elements of each game are better or worse is a mystery to me. However, when it comes to counter-strike, there are a ton of uneducated individuals who do not act with the same fundamental decency. When it comes to competitive esports games, especially competitive CS, it is obvious that CSGO was developed by amateurs who had no idea what they were doing. These same people are now defending the game.

You retake the site, needing to kill 4 people, and you keep doing it, as one commenter put it. There is no doubt in my mind as to who the MVP is who made the victory possible when a teammate enters casually and diffuses the situation. Although one of the responses jokingly proposes “easy, just TK and defuse” as a potential solution, it appears that for fans of the franchise, this debate will last longer than Global Offensive.
