BGMI got banned a few days back, on July 28, 2022. Now, at first fans were assured that it was a glitch, but that bubble popped really quickly when reports started trickling in that the game was banned. It started with the game being pulled down from the Google PlayStore, and soon after, it was taken down from the App Store. Media reports say that the game has been banned under the Section 69A of the IT Act. To jog your memory, it was the same act that got PUBG Mobile and other 100+ apps banned back in 2020 and then in 2021, again. So, what exactly is the IT Act?

The IT Act’s Section 69A gives the government the authority to mandate the banning of public access to any information via any computer resource.

“Where the Central Government or any of its officers specially authorised by it in this behalf is satisfied that it is necessary or expedient so to do, in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to above, it may subject to the provisions of sub-section (2) for reasons to be recorded in writing, by order, direct any agency of the Government or intermediary to block for access by the public or cause to be blocked for access by the public any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted in any computer resource.”

The famous battle royale game is just a year old and has been gathering a lot of eyeballs for the kind of esports platform it has been providing. Not too long ago, players were enjoying the LAN matches that were taking place. A lot of hype had been created for Team SouL to represent India in the PUBG Mobile World Invitational. However, all of this could be going for a toss soon, if the game doesn’t make a return soon to the Google Play Store.
