Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte was impressed with his team’s performance in the thrilling 3-2 Premier League win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday. The Italian coach was delighted with his side’s fighting spirit that earned them three points courtesy of two stoppage-time goals by substitute Steven Bergwijn. Patson Daka had opened the scoring for Leicester midway through the first half before Harry Kane equalised for Spurs. Although James Madison restored the home side’s lead in the second half, Bergwijn netted a brace in the last two minutes of injury-time to grab victory from the jaws of defeat.

Conte told Sky Sports after the match: “A great win. We didn’t deserve to lose. The draw would have been unfair. We created many chances and were unlucky in many circumstances. My team showed we don’t want to give up and fight until the end. They have shown me great will and desire not to lose this game. The compliment is for my players, not for me.”

Leicester looked on course to take three points after Madison had made the score 2-1 in the 75th minute. But, in the 95th minute, Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg played an overhead ball to find the run of Doherty inside the box and the ball somehow fell nicely for Bergwijn to smash home from close range.

Within the next 80 seconds, Spurs scored a dramatic winner. Kane played a brilliant through ball to release Bergwijn on goal and the Dutchman kept his composure, rounded of the goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel before slotting home to seal the win.

Conte said about Bergwijn: “In the past when someone asks me about Steven Bergwijn I was very clear. I said that for me he is an important player because he has characteristics that in our squad we don’t have many creative players.

Bergwijn is an important player: Conte

“He is very good in one vs one, good to beat the man. He can play striker, he can play number 10 and for us, for me, he is an important player and we have to try to improve, to become stronger, not to lose a player and become less strong.

“Steven is a player that if he’s in good physical condition and he has good fitness, he can start the games or he can come in and change the game. For me, I think he’s an important player and you know very well the player has to be happy and I think the player is happy to stay with us and play for Tottenham.”

Spurs are now unbeaten in their last nien league games and the win helped them to 36 points from 19 games, one point behind fourth-placed West Ham United who have played 22 games. Conte’s side will next face third-placed Chelsea at  Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
