Steven Bergwijn came off the bench to score an injury-time brace as Tottenham Hotspur defeated Leicester City 3-2 in the Premier League fixture at King Power Stadium on Wednesday. Leicester opened the scoring through Patson Daka midway through the first half before Harry Kane equalised for Tottenham. James Madison restored Leicester’s lead after the break and the hosts looked set to take all three points with the clock at 95 minutes. But two goals in the space of 80 seconds from Bergwijn turned the game completely around and Spurs secured the win from the jaws of defeat.

Tottenham started the match brightly and were clearly the better side in the initial phase of the game. Kane got past two defenders before his shot from the left side of the box was cleared of the line by Luke Thomas.

Few moments later, Kane’s powerful header from Harry Winks’ corner rattled the crossbar. And then, Lucas Moura tested Peter Schmeichel from outside the box. However, against the run of play, in the 24th minute, Daka put Leicester in front. The 23-year-old combined with Lookman on the left side of the box before slotting home past Hugo Lloris from a tight angle.

Few minutes after the half-hour mark, Lloris made a full-stretch diving save to his left to keep out a long-range effort from Madison. In the 38th minute, Spurs leveled the score through Kane. The English striker was released down the right flank and he cut inside to beat Caglar Soyuncu before finishing off in confident fashion. Two minutes later, Moura played a brilliant through ball to Kane but the 28-year-old ballooned his effort over the bar.

Bergwijn’s brace

Madison has now racked up 15 goal involvements this season and scored five times in his last six appearances.

In the 90th minute, Barnes had a chance to extend the lead as he skipped past Sanchez and had a clear shot at goal but Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg made a last-ditch sliding block to keep spurs in the game.

Five minutes into the stoppage-time, Hojbjerb played a brilliant overhead pass to find the run of Doherty inside the box and the ball somehow fell kindly for Bergwijn to smash home from close range. And then , two minutes later, Kane played a superb through ball to release Bergwijn on goal and the Dutchman kept his composure, rounded the goalkeeper before finishing off the inside of the post.

The win helped Tottenham to 36 points from 19 games while Leicester is languishing at the 10th place with 25 points.
