Liverpool edged past Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to go top of the Premier League standings. Naby Keita’s first half strike was enough for the Reds to secure all three points and extend their winning run to five games across all competitions. Three days after defeating Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of the champions League semi-final at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s side has moved two points clear of Manchester City, who face Leeds united later on the day. Meanwhile the Magpies’ four-match winning streak came to an end, but Eddie Howe’s side can be proud of their performance against the mighty Liverpool, who are chasing a quadruple of titles this time around. Klopp’s side has already won the EFL cup, occupy top spot in the league with four matches to spare, will play Chelsea in the FA cup final next month and travel to Spain for the away leg of the Champions League semi-final next week.

Keita’s goal

Newcastle started the match positively and tried to put pressure on the visitors straight away but as the game progressed, were pushed to the back foot. Liverpool slowly took control of the game, passed the ball around smoothly and started to get into attacking positions. James Milner sent in a cross from the right but Virjil van Dijk’s effort from inside the box went over the bar. The Magpies sat deep and whenever Liverpool players received the ball, they were greeted by a black and whit shirt. But the Red took the lead inside the opening 19 minutes, when Keita collected the ball just outside the penalty area on the right channel and played a one-two with Diogo Jota before going round Dubravka and slotting home from six yards. Newcastle players had complained for a foul on Fabian Schar by Miler during the build up, but the replay showed the Englishman won the ball fairly.

Sadio Mane’s misses

Despite playing with a much changed side, the Reds dominated the proceedings, but were unable to extend the lead. Sadio Mane missed a chance to double the lead when he had only Dubravka to beat and score. Mane was spotted by Luis Diaz after a counter-attack, but the Senegal international failed to find the back of the net while in acres of space. Moments after Mane’s miss, Newcastle put the ball inside the net through Miguel Almiron, but the goal didn’t stand as the Paraguayan star was adjudged offside. After the break, Dubravka palmed away an effort from Jota before Mane once again failed to put the ball inside the net despite being in great space to score at the near post. Dubravka then made a crucial save to deny substitute Mohamed Salah. Liverpool held on to the slender lead and secured the win while the Magpies suffered their first defeat at home since mid-December.
