Newcastle United moved out of the Premier League relegation zone after a 3-1 win against Everton at St. James’ Park on Tuesday. It was a dramatic first 45 minutes with Jamal Lascelles and Mason Holgate scoring respective own goals within 107 seconds of one another, the shortest gap between both sides netting an own goal in a match in Premier League history. However, the hosts took control of the game in the second half. Ryan Fraser scrambled Newcastle ahead in the 56th minute before a superb Kieran Trippier free-kick 10 minutes from time added a late third.

Newly appointed Everton boss Frank Lampard suffered his first Premier League defeat as a manager.  The English head coach handed debuts to Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek, but both were ineffective as the Toffees remained at the 16th spot with 19 points.

Meanwhile Eddie Howe’s side, who are also battling relegation, registered back-to-back league wins for the first time this season and moved into the relative safety of 17th spot on 18 points.

Newcastle started the match brightly as Joelinto tested Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford early in the match from inside the box. Jonjo Shelvey was arguably lucky to not be sent off just after, chopping Anthony Gordon down in midfield. However, referee Anthony Taylor produced only a yellow card.

Against the run of play, Everton took the lead in the 36th minute. A free-kick was delivered into the area, which Holgate tried to sweep home. Matt Targett cleared it off the line, but the rebound hit Lascelles in front of goal and went inside the net. Newcastle responded immediately as another own goal followed at the other end. It came from another set-piece as Lascelles headed Trippier’s corner onto the crossbar. As it came back out, it hit Holgate on the thigh and went past Pickford.

Trippier’s brilliant free-kick goal

Eleven minutes after the break, Newcastle put their nose in front with another scrappy goal. Alli was penalised for giving the ball away in the midfield, allowing Joe Willock to drive forward and play the ball to Saint-Maximin on the left. The 24-year-old’s cross from the left side of the penalty area was bundled home past Townsend, who tried to keep it out on the goal line.

Lampard introduced new signing Van de Beek to control the midfield, but just like Alli, the Dutchman failed to make an impact and the Maggies continued to dominate.

In the 80th minute, Newcastle scored their third of the night through Trippier. The full-back, who had joined the club from Atletico Madrid in the winter transfer window,  lined up a free-kick just to the right of centre and curled a sumptuous effort into the bottom corner for his first goal for the club.

The home side could have added two more as Saint-Maximin drove forward from his own half before giving the ball to Jacob Murphy, but the latter saw his effort hit the post.
