Manchester United slipped out of the Premier League top four after bottom club Burnley came from behind to draw 1-1 at Turf Moor on Tuesday. Paul Pogba had deservedly put the Red Devils in front in a first half before the hosts equalized through Jay Rodriguez in the 47th minute to share the points. United were left to rue their missed chances as they dropped out of the Champions League places following West Ham United’s win over Watford. Meanwhile Burnely remained at the bottom of the points table.

United started the match brightly as Marcus Rashford tested Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope from the right side of the penalty area, inside the opening eight minutes. Three  minutes later, the visitors thought they had scored after Raphael Varane headed the ball inside the net from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick. But the goal was disallowed after VAR intervention for an offside by the interfering Harry Maguire.

However, Ralf Rangnick’s side put their nose in front in the 18th minute. Left-back Luke Shaw’s cut back from the byline found Pgba inside the box. The Frenchman deposited the ball into the top corner with an expert finish to underline United’s obvious superiority.

Few minutes later, Josh Brownhill deposited Rashford’s cross beyond his own goalkeeper but was spared because of a foul by Pogba moment later. And then, just after the half-hour mark, Pope produced an astonishing save to deny Edinson Cavani from close range.

Five minutes from break, Pope once again made a decent save at the near post to deny Rashford and keep Burnley in the game going into the half-time.

Rodriguez’ equalizer

Within two minutes of the restart, the hosts leveled the score. After some brilliant work from Wout Weghorst to get past two United players, the Dutchman played the ball to Rodriguez on the left. The Englishman dribbled forward before slotting the ball past United keeper David de Gea to make the score 1-1.

After the goal, Burnely looked the more confident side as Weghorst tested De Gea from outside the box. At the other end, Rashford dribbled past two Burnley players before cutting the ball back for Varane in front of goal. But the Frenchman’s attempted flick was blocked by James Tarkowski.

Even the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo was not enough to find the breakthrough and the match ended in a draw. After the draw, United are in the fifth spot with 39 points from 23 games, one point adrift the top four while Burnley remain at the bottom with 14 points from 10 games, four points away from safety.
