This huge win at Anfield means that Liverpool now have a 9-0 aggregate advantage over United this season having already thrashed them 5-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season, back when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the helm for the Red Devils. Fortunes haven’t really improved a lot for the Mancunian club and this 4-0 loss just continues to add to their embarrassments that Manchester United have already endured this season.

Now on the back of this famous Liverpool glory against Manchester United, lets revisit some of the historic and iconic Liverpool wins against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Liverpool vs Manchester United: 5-0, Old Trafford, October 24,2021

In a trip back to the memory lane of Liverpool’s famous wins against United, first one comes as early as the current Premier League season. It was the end of autumn and United boss, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was under massive scrutiny and pressure to deliver results, having made a very disappointing start to the season.

Agony and pain were just to continue for the fans of Manchester United as Liverpool came to the Theatre of Dreams and just ran over a disorganized United team and widened the gap between the two rivals. Mohamed Salah carried on his great form and scored a hattrick in less than 50 minutes accompanied by goals through Naby Keita and Diogo Jota. United’s horror day was made more miserable when Paul Pogba was sent-off after half time having made a terrible tackle on Naby Keita.

In the stands sat a helpless Sir Alex Ferguson who could just watch the club he coached for over 20 years just getting thrashed at their own ground. It was a day of great joy and ecstasy for the Liverpool supporters who saw their team march on in the Premier League title race along with Manchester City and Chelsea while the United fans could only just hope for better times with most of them having already left Old Trafford by the half-time interval.

Liverpool vs Manchester United: 3-0, Old Trafford, March 16,2014

Less than a year after their greatest ever manager, Sir Alex Ferguson had left Manchester United, the club found itself in shambles. Their coach David Moyes couldn’t replicate his success at Everton with the Red Devils and hence the club found itself struggling for a top four spot, an unimaginable situation for United back then. Liverpool came into the match aiming to pass yet another test on their road to a first ever Premier League title.

Liverpool completely dominated and battered their opponents from start to end. In what could have easily been a goal fest for Brendan Rodgers’ side, the Anfield team relied on their skipper, Steven Gerrard and their most in-form player at the time, Luis Suarez to guide them to a victory and worsen United’s woes. Gerrard scored a brace from the penalty spot and even had the opportunity to score a hattrick of penalties but he missed his third one. Luis Suarez hit the last nail in the coffin by adding a third goal. To make matters worse, United captain Nemanja Vidic was sent off which was his fourth dismissal against Liverpool.

Liverpool’s complete performance highlighted their dominance in the Premier League that season and the Reds had a spectacular run narrowly missing out on the title to the eventual winners, Manchester City. United on the other hand, finished 8th, an all-time low for the club which inevitably led to the sacking of David Moyes.

Then manager of Liverpool, Rafa Benitez needed his side to win the three points at the home of Liverpool’s biggest rivals to keep the hopes alive of a first ever Premier League title. United began the day at first in the Premier League table, seven points ahead of Liverpool. Benitez’s side hadn’t won their last three outings at Old Trafford but all that was to change.

It was no where near to a perfect start for Liverpool who conceded an early penalty scored by Cristiano Ronaldo. After that, however it was all about the Merseyside team. Fernando Torres bullied Nemanja Vidic and equalized as United’s lead lasted for a mere five minutes. Vidic was shown a red card later in the match and was sent-off. Steven Gerrard won and scored a penalty just before half-time to ensure that Liverpool went into the interval ahead. The Liverpool skipper went on to give his iconic kiss celebration later. A Fabio Aurelio free-kick and a lob from Andrea Dossena ensured Liverpool take the three points from Manchester.

This win cut the gap between the two sides to four points and ensured that Liverpool had the momentum to carry into the final stage of the season. However, they couldn’t capitalize on the victory and ultimately it was United who were crowned the champions of England. But that can’t take away anything from what was surely one of the most emphatic victories of Liverpool against United.
