It is understandable that Manchester United fans are hurting after seeing their side get thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night. The heavy defeat more or less ends the small chance of United sneaking into the top four places in the Premier League. More than that, it also showed the gulf of difference between the two rivals. Unable to hide their frustrations, Manchester United supporters targeted their club skipper Harry Maguire. Some of the fans started the trend #MaguireOut which has been gaining momentum on Twitter.

The hashtag started to trend after fans were left frustrated with Harry Maguire’s defending against Liverpool on Tuesday night. Some went as far as questioning the role played by Maguire in two goals conceded by the team at Anfield. The English defender was caught out of position for the opener scored by Luis Diaz. In the build-up to the goal, Liverpool had the ball at the halfway line when Maguire went to press Sadio Mane. However, the Manchester United skipper could neither apply the pressure on the Senegalese forward nor could get back in time, leaving him out of position.

Harry Maguire blamed by fans for two Liverpool goals

It left plenty of vacant space on the left flank that was exploited well by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian raced inside the penalty box unopposed before squaring the ball for Luis Diaz to score the opener just five minutes after kick-off. The early goal opened the floodgates for Liverpool.

Maguire was then called out for his part in the fourth goal conceded by the team. He misdirected a pass to Hannibal Mejbri on United’s right flank, which allowed Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson to win back possession. A few seconds later, the ball was in the back of Manchester United’s net.
