Manchester United has been accused of failing to ensure that its players behaved properly during their win over Brighton. The charge stems from an incident in which United players surrounded the referee after Lewis Dunk’s challenge on Anthony Elanga in the 53rd minute. Dunk was initially booked by Peter Bankes, but the Brighton captain was sent off after VAR Jarred Gillett told him to consult the pitchside monitor. The deadline for United to respond is Monday.

After the game, Brighton manager Graham Potter said: “It was a yellow card live. [Brighton defender] Adam Webster was on the cover and it was not clear and obvious he can’t get there, so I don’t understand the intervention. Once [the referee] goes to the screen, there is only one outcome.”

Speaking about the behavior of the United players in the incident, Potter said that it was understandable. “I don’t blame them. They have to do their bit for their team. You need the referee and VAR to make decisions outside of any external calls.”

Ronaldo breaks goal drought

Cristiano Ronaldo was on target as Manchester United defeated Brighton 2-0 in the Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Tuesday to go to fourth in the standings. The Portuguese international had gone six games without scoring but blasted home early in the second half to end his goal drought and put Ralf Rangnick’s side ahead. Immediately after the goal, Brighton were reduced to 10-man as Lewis Dunk received a red card for a foul of Anthony Elanaga. Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time goal sealed United’s victory.

Six minutes into the second half, The Red Devils put their nose in front courtesy of a stunning strike from Ronaldo. Bissouma conceded possession and the ball fell to Ronaldo, who cut inside past Webster before unleashing a powerful strike into the back of the net. Few minutes later, Dunk fouled Elanga after his own poor touch. The referee showed a red card after VAR intervention as it was a clear foul and Elanga could have gone clear on goal.

United got their second of the night in the seventh minute of stoppage-time. Pogba’s quickly taken free-kick released Fernandes on the right, the playmaker dribbled all the way into the box before firing home to seal the win.
