Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea kept his 128th clean sheet in the Premier League as the Red Devils defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Spanish international played a big role in United picking up all three against the Seagulls and moving to fourth in the standings. The 31-year-old has 163 clean sheets to his name in all competitions and is 17 away from equalling club legend Peter Schmeichel’s record of 180.

So far this season, the Spanish shot-stopper has achieved eight shut-outs, away to Wolves (1-0), Tottenham (3-0), Villarreal (2-0) and Norwich (1-0) and in the home games against Crystal Palace (1-0), Aston Villa (1-0, Emirates FA Cup), West Ham (1-0) and now Brighton (2-0).

On Tuesday, De Gea once again produced a moment of inspired brilliance to thwart Brighton. The Red Devils were not at their best in the first half and Brighton looked the better side going forward. Jakub Moder’s powerful header from a cross was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the Spaniard.

Such are the standards United’s number one has set this season, the Spaniard made the save look routine, but it was a world class save at a crucial time. Ralf Rangnick’s side went on to win the match courtesy of second half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, but if it wasn’t for De Gea the result could have been different.

Schmeichel achieved his total of 180 clean sheets in 398 appearances. The Denmark international helped the club to collect 15 trophies since joining the club in 1991. He played a pivotal role in the club’s treble in his final season, 1998/99.

With De Gea still just 31-years-old, it seems there’s good chance he will eventually surpass Schmeichel and top the list.

All-Time Manchester United clean sheets

  1. Peter Schmeichel: 180/398 appearances
  2. Alex Stepney: 175/539
  3. David De Gea: 163/472
  4. Gary Bailey: 161/ 375
  5. Edwin van der Sar: 135/ 266

The Red Devils are fighting for a Champions League spot and despite a turbulent season, De Gea has been one of the team’s top performers. United will next take on Leeds United in the Premier League fixture on Sunday when De Gea will be aiming to keep another Clean sheet.
