Manchester City and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday night. The match was dubbed by many as a “Premier League final”, with the winner more or less securing the title. However, the game ended in a draw. Liverpool twice came from behind to secure a draw on Sunday. As a result, Manchester City continue to top the table with 74 points from 31 games and Liverpool are a point behind at 73 from the same number of matches. This means the remaining seven league fixtures will be like seven finals for both sides.

Kevin De Bruyne, who scored the opener on Sunday, felt they should have scored more against Jurgen Klopp’s side, especially in the first half. “It was hard. I think we played excellent,” he said after the match, as per their club’s website. “The way we played today was very good and we should have scored more.

“It is what it is and we keep going. We spoke before that the quality and intensity is there. It showed today. It was a great game. It should have been more [at halftime] but we were still winning. The way the second half started that’s the disappointment. We know in a couple of chances Liverpool can score. I think we played great, we created enough chances to win the game today, but it didn’t happen.”

Kevin De Bruyne: This is the way we need to play

Manchester City could have scored more goals but Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez missed good opportunities. Mahrez’s chance came right at the end. Had it gone in, the scoreline would have been totally different. “Riyad [Mahrez] chose to chip the keeper, if it goes in it’s a wonder goal but it didn’t go in today and that can happen. I think we played very well and had the upper hand today, but we didn’t win, this is the way we need to play for the rest of the games,” he added.

Earlier, Kevin De Bruyne opened the score through a deflected goal, but Diogo Jota equalised in the 13th minute. However, City went ahead for a second time in the first half, thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ goal eight minutes before half-time. At the start of the second period, Sadio Mane, however, leveled the scores and there were no more goals after that point.

The 2-2 draw means Pep Guardiola’s side still edge Liverpool by one point at the top of the table, with seven matches remaining in the league. “I know a lot of people said that whoever wins today gets the title, but I don’t think either team thinks that way. It’s way too hard,” he explained.

“The schedule is way too tough for both teams to win all the remaining games until the end of season, we’re going to try but the way we played today is the way we need to move forward.”
