Liverpool and Manchester City played out an action-packed 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday. Liverpool twice rallied from a goal deficit to level the scoreline. First, it was Diogo Jota, who equalised in the 13th minute after Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected opener. However, City went ahead for a second time in the first half, thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ goal eight minutes before half-time. At the start of the second period, Sadio Mane leveled the scores, as both sides had to settle for a point. The blockbuster clash was dubbed by many as a “Premier League final” due to their positions on the table.

A win for either side would have given them a great opportunity to claim the title at the end of the campaign. However, both teams were not able to separate each other, meaning the final seven games of the season could have plenty of twists and turns. For now, Manchester City are on 74 points from 31 games and Liverpool are a point behind at 73 from the same number of matches.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: A hugely anticipated contest

The high-octane clash at Etihad was undoubtedly the most-anticipated clash of the weekend. With a lot riding on the result, both teams knew they have to give nothing but 100% to have a chance at winning the game. To both side’s credit, they were heading into the match on a positive note.

Prior to the match, Manchester City were unbeaten in their last eight matches and they have only experienced defeat once in the last 22 outings.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side were also on a terrific run of its own, winning their last ten Premier League matches on the bounce. It meant that fans had to brace themselves for a special evening and the game did not disappoint them.

Nothing to separate both sides

Earlier, the home side started the game with a bang. Bernardo Silva passed from a free-kick into the feet of De Bruyne and his shot took a deflection off Matip and sneaked in for the opener. Etihad stadium erupted in celebrations but the joy did not last for long.

Left-back Andy Robertson found Trent Alexander-Arnold on the byline and the English full-back struck a volleyed cut-back for Jota. The Portuguese forward converted the opportunity to level the score following an action-packed start to the match. The high-octane clash lived up to the expectations, with both teams playing at a break-neck speed.

However, City’s persistent pressure paid off. De Bruyne and Joao Cancelo went close to scoring but it was Jesus who put Pep Guardiola’s side back in front. But that lead did not last long either. Liverpool came out of the break with all guns blazing and their reward was a quick-fire equaliser. Mohamed Salah passed the ball into the path of Mane, who hit a sublime strike into the top corner of the net.

It was back all square again. The second half did not produce many goalmouth actions but still, the game continued to be played at a high tempo. In the end, Riyad Mahrez had a chance to put the home side in front but his effort went over the crossbar to end the pulsating match in a draw.
