Manchester City are one game away from retaining the Premier League title. They know their task at hand – beat Aston Villa on Sunday and the league title is theirs. A season that promised so much is coming to a less than impressive ending. The league trophy is the only possible silverware Pep Guardiola can win this campaign. They are currently sitting first in the standings and are only a point ahead of second-placed Liverpool. City have 90 points in the table from 37 games – one more than Jurgen Klopp’s side in the race for the title. A win on Sunday will secure City a fourth Premier League title in five seasons.

At the turn of the year, Manchester City were cruising to the league title. They enjoyed a healthy lead over the Reds. However, Liverpool went on an incredible run in the second part of the campaign and narrowed the gap to just one point. Klopp’s side will be playing Wolves on Sunday. With Aston Villa and Wolves have very little to play for this weekend, both City and Liverpool are expected to win their respective matches at their home grounds. In the unlikely event that both teams finish on the same number of points, City will win the title due to a superior goal difference. Their goal difference is 72 compared to Liverpool’s 66.

Aston Villa are currently 14th in the Premier League table, having accumulated 45 points from 37 games. They are on the same points as Crystal Palace but are a place below due to an inferior goal difference. All Villa can expect from their final match of the season is to finish the campaign on a high. Plus the match will be away from home and the most important clash for City. With a lot riding on the clash for the home side, Villa can try to take advantage of the situation by putting pressure on the hosts. But former Liverpool player Steven Gerrard, who is the manager of Villa, would need a miracle for his side to get anything from Sunday’s game at Etihad.

Possible line-up

Manchester City received a major boost with the availability of defensive duo – John Stones and Kyle Walker. The duo along with Ruben Dias have been side-lined with injury recently. No one expected any of them to return before the end of the season. However, to the fans’ delight, the England pair returned to training on Thursday morning. It is not clear whether they will be able to start the match on Sunday, but they have a good possibility of playing some part in that game.

“We have incredible doctors and physios. They (Walker and Stones) have trained today. We will see tomorrow. It is good for us to have them back,” Guardiola said ahead of the weekend game, as per their official website. Besides the manager also stated that there were no new injury concerns for them. On the other hand, Aston Villa defenders Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause will miss the clash on Sunday. Question marks also hang over Leon Bailey’s participation.

Manchester City possible line-up: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodri, Silva, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus

Aston Villa possible line-up: Martinez, Cash, Chambers, Mings, Digne; Luiz, McGinn, Ramsey; Coutinho, Ings, Watkins
