Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scored a brace each as Liverpool thrashed Leeds United 6-0 in the Premier League fixture at Anfield on Wednesday. Salah converted two penalties and assisted Joel Matip in the first half. The hosts kept their momentum after the break with Mane scoring double and Virgil van Dijk completing the drubbing with a sixth in stoppage time. The win helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to move to 60 points from 26 games, just three points behind leaders Manchester City.

Leeds were close to getting the opening goal inside five minutes when Daniel James dispossessed goalkeeper Alisson Becker but Matip quickly read the danger and cleared the ball from in front of an empty goal.

With 15 minutes on the clock, left-back Robertson’s powerful cross was blocked by Stuart Dallas with his hand and referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot. Salah stepped up, sent the keeper illa Meslier the wrong way and deposited the ball into the bottom left corner. Few minutes later, Luis Diaz made a darting run down the left flank, got inside the box and forced a decent save from Meslier at the near post.

The Reds doubled the lead at the half-hour mark, when Matip gathered the ball near the half-way line, played the ball to Salah on the right flank, who delivered an inch-perfect return pass for Matip, who had continued his run into the box, to slot home past Meslier.

Few minutes later, Salah once again played a superb through ball to find the run of Mane, who was brought down inside the box by Luke Ayling to concede another penalty. Salah converted the spot-kick to make the score 3-0 on 35 minutes.

Mane’s brace

On the stroke of half-time, Trent Alexander-Arnold played a superb first-time overhead ball to release Salah on goal, the Egyptian dribbled into the box and lifted the ball over an advancing keeper but Junior Firpo made a goal-line clearance to deny the 29-year-old a hat-trick.

Ten minutes from time, Salah played a superb through ball to Jordan Henderson on the right side of the box, and the midfielder delivered a first-time low cross for Mane to fire home from in front of goal.

Liverpool were very quick and lethal on their counters as substitute Divock Origi created the fifth goal from one such move down the left flank as the ball fell to the path of Mane after an initial save from Meslier. The Senegal international slotted home into an empty net to complete his brace. In the third minute of injury-time, Van Dijk headed home from Robertson’s corner kick to make the score 6-0.
