The wait for a permanent manager at Old Trafford is finally over. Manchester United have appointed Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as the club’s new manager, subject to work visa requirements. He will take over the role from interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season. It should not come as a surprise, as the Dutchman was expected to take over the role at the Premier League club for a good while now. It was reported last week that the Red Devils have reached an agreement in principle with Erik ten Hag to take over the club’s permanent manager role. Back then it was believed that due to Ajax playing their Dutch Cup final against PSV Eindhoven on April 17, an announcement will not happen before that match.

Now that the game is over and all the required process is completed, Manchester United have made the announcement that ten Hag will be with the club till June 2025 with an option to extend for another year. “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Men’s First Team Manager, subject to work visa requirements, from the end of this season until June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year,” a club statement read.

Who said what?

On the managerial announcement, John Murtough, football director, said: “During the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his team’s attractive, attacking football and commitment to youth.

“In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that. We wish Erik the best of luck as he focuses on achieving a successful end to the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”

On his part, Erik ten Hag expressed his excitement to move to Old Trafford. However, the 52-year-old assured the Ajax fans that he will be fully committed to the team till the end of the season. “It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead. I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve,” Erik ten Hag said.

“It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.”
