He is currently one of the team’s experienced players. Karunaratne represents the Sinhalese Sports Club in domestic cricket. Karunaratne initially competed for Sri Lanka in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, however he was forced to withdraw after breaking his bone in a warm-up game. Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal scored 238 runs together during the Test series against the West Indies, setting a new record for Sri Lanka in Test cricket for third wicket partnerships. While playing against India in 2017, Karunaratne attained the milestone of 1000 Test runs. Karunaratne was appointed as Test captain for Sri Lanka in 2019, because Chandimal was dropped from the team. Karunaratne and Marvan Atapattu, the openers for Sri Lanka, tied the record for the most Test hundreds when Karunaratne struck his 16th century while playing against Ireland.
