Nathon Lyon is a professional cricketer, who plays for Australian cricket team Internationally. Nathon has represented the Australian team in all the three formats of the game. Nathon was born 20 November 1987 in the Young region of New South Wales, Australia. He is commonly called by the name Garry by his teammates. Nathon is a right arm off spin bowler who specializes in Test cricket. He plays for New South Wales in domestic cricket. The first International match he played was back in 2011. Nathon is considered as one of the best off spin bowlers Australia has ever produced. He also holds the record of most number of wickets as an off spin bowler in Australia. Nathon has already crossed the milestone of playing 100 Test cricket matches.

As per the 2023 rankings, Nathon is Australia’s third highest wicket taking bowler of all time. His International rank is 8th with 482 wickets. Nathon in his early age used to play for University of Canberra Cricket Club in ACT grade cricket. Nathon shifted to Adelaide in 2010 and started playing for Prospect Cricket Club in the South Australian Grade Cricket League. He also was part of Comets in the Futures League. After Nathon’s performance in the 2010 Futures League for the Comets, he got the opportunity to become a part of KFC T20 Big Bash. His first team in the KFC Big Bash tournament was the Southern Redbacks, as they signed him for the 2010-11 season.

In the 2010-11 season of the KFC T20 Big Bash, Nathon became the highest wicket taking bowler. His team Southern Redbacks won the following tournament. In the limited overs game, Nathon represented South Australia and got selected in Australia A team to play against Zimbabwe due to his outstanding performance. In the first edition of the Big Bash League (BBL), Nathon was selected by Adelaide Strikers. It was on 31 August 2011, when Nathon played his debut Test match for Australia against Sri Lanka at the Galle. On 1 September 2011, Nathon took the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara on his very first ball. He became the 3rd Australian to take a wicket on the very first ball of a debut match. 

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, during the Boxing Day Test match against England on 28 December 2013, Nathon reached the milestone of 100 Test wickets. He also took his first 5-fer in that match. Nathon became the second cricketer in Test cricket history to remain not out during the 5 Test match series on 5 January 2014. It was on 29 January 2016, when Nathon played his T20 debut match for Australia against India. During the second Test between Australia and India on 4 March 2017, Nathon recorded one of his best bowling figures, taking 8 wickets for 50 runs. Nathon Lyon is the 8th Australian bowler overall and 2nd spinner after Shane Warne to reach the milestone of 250 Test wickets. In 2023, during the Test match in Ahmedabad, Nathon broke the record of taking most wickets in India as an overseas bowler.
