Dimuth Karunaratne is a professional cricketer, who plays for Sri Lanka cricket team Internationally. Karunaratne has represented the Sri Lankan cricket team in One Day Internationals and Test cricket so far. He is one of the most experienced players in the team currently. Karunaratne was born on 21 April 1988 in Colombo city of Sri Lanka. Karunaratne is a left handed batsman who is capable of giving a strong start to the team by scoring runs in the opening. He opens the batting line up for Sri Lanka. Karunaratne is considered to be one of the best Test opening batsmen. In domestic cricket Karunaratne plays for Sinhalese Sports Club. After Dilshan, Karunaratne is the second batsman to score 3 Test hundreds in a single cricketing season. 

Karunaratne’s college was St. Joseph’s College of Colombo, from where cricketers like Angelo Matthews and Chaminda Vaas came. He was the leading run scorer in his school’s team. Karunaratne was called up to the Sri Lanka ODI team, after he performed consistently well in the Sri Lanka under 19 team in 2011. In the 2017-18 Super Four Provincial Tournament, Karunaratne was appointed as Dambulla’s captain. For the first half of the 2019 cricket season, Karunaratne was signed by Hampshire county cricket club as their overseas batsman. Karunaratne scored his 44th first class hundred for Colombo to secure their win during the National Super Provincial 4 Day Tournament in 2021. Karunaratne got the opportunity to play for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, when they signed him in 2022 to play three first class matches for them.

The doors of International Test cricket opened for Karunaratne in late 2012. Due to injured Tilakaratne Dilshan, Karunaratne was selected in Sri Lanka’s home series. He played his debut Test match at galle, but unfortunately got out on duck in his first innings. In the second innings, he managed to score a half century and helped his team win the match. He was then selected for Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia. Karunaratne didn’t prove to be impactful in the first two Test matches of the series, however in the third match, he scored 85 runs which was his highest Test score at that time. At Hagley Oval Christchurch, Karunaratne scored his first Test hundred against New Zealand on 28 December 2014.

Karunaratne, initially was part of the Sri Lanka team that took part in 2015 ICC cricket world cup, but unfortunately, he broke his bone in the practice match and was ruled out. During the Test series against West Indies, Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal recorded the highest third wicket partnership for Sri Lanka in Test cricket by scoring 238 runs. Karunaratne reached the milestone of 1000 Test runs in 2017, while playing against India. Karunaratne was appointed as Test captain for Sri Lanka in 2019, because Chandimal was dropped from the team. When Karunaratne scored his 16 Test hundred while playing against Ireland, he equalled the record of most Test hundreds with Marvan Atapattu as Sri Lanan openers.
