Dhananjaya de Silva is a professional cricketer who plays for Sri Lanka cricket team Internationally. Dhananjaya has represented the Sri Lankan team in all the three formats of the game. Dhananjaya was born on 6 September 1991 in the Hambantota region of Sri Lanka. In domestic cricket Dhananjaya plays for Tamil Union. He is also a vice captain of Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20I teams. At the annual cricket awards in Sri Lanka, Dhananjaya was named as batsman of the year in Test cricket format in the year 2017. He used to play in the school cricket senior team at the Richmond College and in the 2010-11 season, he led the Richmond first XI team. Dhananjaya’s father was a politician, and was shot by an unknown man in front of their house. All these didn’t stop Dhananjaya to stop playing cricket. 

In the 2017-18 Super Four Provincial Tournament, Dhananjaya was selected as vice captain of Colombo’s team. Dhananjaya was named as the player of the tournament in the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. In the first edition of the Lanka Premier League, he was selected by Jaffna Stallions in October 2020. In the 2021 Invitational T20 League tournament, Dhananjaya was appointed as the captain of the team SLC Blues. In the third season of the Lanka Premier League, he was selected by Jaffna Kings. Dhananjaya got the chance to play for Sri Lanka in T20 Internationals (T20I) in 2015, as they had their series against Pakistan. It was on 30 July 2015, when he played his debut T20I match against Pakistan and scored 31 runs.

It was on 16 June 2016, when Dhananjaya played his One Day International (ODI) debut match for Sri Lanka against Ireland. He was the 169th ODI player for Sri Lanka. Dhananjaya was selected in Sri Lanka’s Test team in July 2016 for their series against Australia. It was on 26 July, when he played his debut Test match against Australia. In the third Test match of the same series, Dhananjaya scored his first Test hundred. He saved Sri Lankan batting at a very crucial time. Dhananjaya was the highest run scorer of the series with 325 runs including 1 century and 1 half century. After Sri Lanka’s star opening batsman Dilshan retired, Dhananjaya was promoted to his place to open the innings for Sri Lanka. 

There was a time when Dhananjaya was dropped from all the formats of the game due to his poor performance against South Africa. He was not included in Sri Lanka’s team for 2017 Champions Trophy. Later after his all round performances on a few occasions, he was selected in Sri Lanka’s team for the 2019 ICC cricket world cup. In a match against England in the world cup, Dhananjaya took 3 wickets to seal the win against England. In December 2019, Dhananjaya scored his 6th Test hundred against Pakistan. His seventh century came in 2021 in a Test match against Bangladesh. In March 2023, while playing against New Zealand he fell short by 2 runs to his 10th Test hundred.
