Matheesha Pathirana is a professional cricketer who has represented Sri Lankan cricket team Internationally in the T20 format of the game. Matheesha was born on 18 December 2002 in Kandy region of Sri Lanka. Matheesha is a young and talented fast bowler, who is capable of taking wickets while maintaining a decent economy rate at the same time. Matheesha is seen forming well at the depth overs in the T20 format, as he can bowl continuous yorkers, which makes it difficult for the batsmen. Matheesha’s bowling action resembles the action of former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga. Matheesha bowls by bringing his arm at a certain angle which helps him to bowl faster and continuous yorkers.
Matheesha Pathirana is seen bowling constantly at the speed of 140 km/hr plus. Matheesha was selected in the SLC Grey’s team for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 league in August 2021. He played his debut T20 match for the SLC Greys on 22 August in the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 league. Before playing in the SLC Greys’ team, Matheesha was part of the Sri Lanka under 19 team. He was part of the team that played in the ICC under 19 cricket world cup. Matheesha’s performance helped him to earn the spot in the under 19 team for the 2022 cricket world cup that took place in West Indies. In January 2022, he was named in the Sri Lanka under 19 team that played in the ICC under 19 cricket world cup.

Matheesha’s consistent performance and his abilities opened the doors of Indian Premier League (IPL) for him. Matheesha was signed by Chennai Super Kings Franchise in April 2022, for the Indian Premier League 2022 season. Matheesha played his debut IPL match for CSK against Gujarat Titans (GT). He took the wicket of Shubman Gill on the very first ball of his IPL career. By doing so, he became the first Sri Lankan bowler and 9th bowler overall to do so in the Indian Premier League. For the third season of the Lanka Premier League, Matheesha was signed by Kandy Falcons in July 2022. Matheesha’s form helped him earn his place in the Sri Lankan national cricket team.
For Sri Lanka’s T20 series against Australia, Matheesha was selected in the T20 team in May 2022. Nevertheless, he didn’t play any match in the series and was dropped out due to injury. For the 2022 Asia Cup, Matheesha was selected in Sri Lanka’s T20 team. Against Afghanistan on 27 August 2022, Matheesha played his T20 International debut match for Sri Lanka. He also became part of Sri Lanka’s team for their One Day International and T20 International series against New Zealand in March 2023. Matheesha, currently is one of the most important bowlers of CSK in IPL 2023 season, as he has been performing consistently well under the captaincy of MS. Dhoni.
