Angelo Mathews is a professional cricketer who represents Sri Lanka cricket team Internationally. Currently Angelo is one of the most experienced players in the Sri Lankan cricket team. He has represented Sri Lanka in all the formats of the game and also has led his team in all the formats. Angelo was born on 2 June 1987 in the Colombo city of Sri Lanka. He is an all round player who bats right handed and bowls right arm medium fast. Angelo has appeared in more than 100 Test matches for Sri Lanka. He played a crucial part in the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 ICC T20 world cup. He was also part of the team that reached the finals of the 2011 ICC cricket world cup in India. Angelo currently plays in only One Day Internationals and Test matches. 

Angelo’s International career began in late 2008. He right from the beginning is a genuine all round cricketer. Against Zimbabwe in 2008, Angelo played his debut One Day International match. In July 2009 at the Galle against Pakistan, Angelo played his debut Test match for Sri Lanka. Against Australia in September 2011, he scored his first Test hundred. Angelo got the opportunity to lead the Sri Lanka team in the Test format. He became the youngest captain of all time at the age of 25 in Sri Lanka. Under his captaincy Sri Lanka won the historic Test series against England in 2014. His highest Test score came against Zimbabwe in 2020. He scored 200 runs off 428 balls.

Mathews was appointed captain of Sri Lanka T20 team after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down from the post. This happened after Sri Lanka lost the finals of the 2012 ICC T20 world cup. Later, Angelo was appointed captain of the remaining ODI and T20I formats as well. In the 2010-11 Sri Lanka tour of Australia, Angelo played an important role. In the first match of the series, Angelo’s 77 runs innings along with Malinga helped Sri Lanka win. Angelo and Malinga recorded the highest 9th wicket partnership in ODI of 132 runs. In the 2015 ICC world cup pool A match between Sri Lanka and Scotland, Angelo scored his fastest ODI half century in just 20 balls. This was the fastest half century by any Sri Lankan player in the world cup.  

After six months of Angelo resigning from his post as a captain, he was reappointed as a captain of ODI and T20I on 9 January 2018. Prior to the 2018-19 cricketing season in Sri Lanka, Angelo was given his central contract. Dinesh Chandimal replaced Angelo as a captain after their defeat in the 2018 Asia cup. Angelo scored his 9th Test hundred against New Zealand in late 2018. He batted alongside Kusal Mendis the whole day and this was the 5th time to do so by any Sri Lankan player. Angelo Mathews has played a total of 403 International matches including Test, ODI and T20I. He has scored a total of 7218 runs in 104 Test matches and he is the fifth Sri Lankan batsman to score more than 6000 runs in Test cricket. He has scored 5865 runs in 221 ODIs and 1148 runs in 78 T20Is.
