West Indies are having a bumper home summer when it comes to international cricket. The side will be playing four Tests and three ODIs. More importantly, they will be playing 15 Twenty20 Internationals from June to September. In addition, the players will also have massive amounts of T20 cricket in the form of the Caribbean Premier League and the IPL. The fact that West Indies are playing many Twenty20 Internationals gives them an added boost considering that October-November 2021 will see the ICC World T20 being played.

West Indies are the two-time champions, having won in 2012 and 2016 in the sub-continent. In 2012, they had defeated hosts Sri Lanka in the final while they got the better of England in 2016 with Carlos Brathwaite hitting four sixes in the last over. West Indies are in prime position to once again repeat the heroics of Twenty20 success heading into the tournament which is three months away.

West Indies stumble against South Africa

However, the two-time World T20 champions did not start their home summer on a good note. After losing the two Tests to South Africa by an innings margin, they were humbled surprisingly in the Twenty20 Internationals as well. In the five-match Twenty20 series, West Indies lost 2-3 against a South Africa side lacking experience.

After winning the first Twenty20 International by eight wickets, South Africa bounced back thanks to the efforts of Quinton de Kock and Tabraiz Shamsi. The Proteas won the next two matches by 16 runs and one run. In the fourth match, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo were the stars in West Indies sneaking over the line to level the series.

In the final match, De Kock and Aiden Markram put on a magnificent display. The duo stitched a solid stand of 128, with de Kock and Markram scoring 60 and 70 respectively. South Africa’s 168/4 was a just-par total. Evin Lewis responded with 52 and Shimron Hetmyer hit an aggressive 33 off 31 balls. Lungi Ngidi took three wickets and was well supported by Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder with two apiece. Shamsi ended with 1/11 and his economy rate of under three proved to be crucial in South Africa winning the match by 25 runs and the series.
