Virat Kohli and the Indian cricket team are on the ultimate high after winning the Oval Test. Rohit Sharma’s first overseas century set the base for India’s dominance. But, Shardul Thakur stole the show with a magnificent all-round performance, scoring fifties in both innings and taking crucial wickets. Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also played a vital part along with KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara. India’s 157-run win helped them take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, with one Test to play.

The win at The Oval is significant considering that they had to overcome a 99-run deficit. The lower-order partnerships once again helped India recover from a precarious position. Just like it happened at Lord’s, India’s lower order pushed the side to a dominant position. England’s fragile batting was once again exposed, with Jasprit Bumrah putting in a brilliant performance in the second innings.

In the aftermath of the win, here are some of the fabulous records set by the Indian cricket team.

Numbers for the Indian cricket team after Oval Test

50 – After a golden jubilee number of years, India has finally won a Test match at The Oval. It was in 1971 where India won a Test series for the first time in England. The venue was the Oval. Since then, India did not win in 2002, 2007, 2011, 2014, and 2018.

3 – Number of wins for Virat Kohli as captain of the Indian cricket team in England. This has made him the most successful skipper in the history of India when it comes to contests in England. In 2018 and 2021, Kohli has won a total of three Tests. India won the Trent Bridge Test in 2018 while here, they have won in Lord’s and The Oval.

25 – Number of Tests played by Jasprit Bumrah in which he has taken 100 wickets. He is the quickest Indian to reach the landmark, beating the previous mark set by Kapil Dev. Bumrah’s wickets in the second innings played a crucial role in India getting a big win.

1 – Number of overseas centuries for Rohit Sharma in Tests. The Oval ton was his first ton outside the sub-continent. He also went past 3000 runs in Tests. He is the only opener in the history of the game to hit a century in all three formats as an opener.

20 – For the first time in their home summer since 2001, England will endure a season where they have not won a single series at home. In 2001, they drew against Pakistan and lost the Ashes to Australia 1-4. In 2021, they have lost a series to New Zealand and they cannot win a series against India.

Virat Kohli hails the win

After the end of the match, Virat Kohli hailed the Oval win as one of the best in his tenure. He also stated that the current Indian team is in England to win and not survive.

“I am proud of the character shown by the team, this is amongst the top three bowling performances I have witnessed as India captain. It’s quite relative what you call flat. The conditions were hot and we knew were in with an opportunity when Jadeja was bowling into the rough. The bowlers were good with the reverse swing today. We believed we could get all 10 wickets, we had the belief. As soon as the ball started reversing, Bumrah said give me the ball. He bowled that spell and swung the game in our favour with those two huge wickets. I think you pointed his performance. Rohit’s innings was fantastic. What Shardul has done in this game stands out,” Kohli said.
