Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the Sri Lanka Twenty20 International Series after suffering a concussion during the second match. Sri Lanka needed 12 runs to win off the last three balls in their chase of 165. Maheesh Theekshana hit a full toss from Marcus Stoinis to the deep midwicket fence. Steve Smith dived to ensure the ball did not go over the ropes. He caught the ball but his head hit the ground really hard. Glenn Maxwell, who was near Steve Smith, gestured immediately for help.

Although Steve Smith was seen asking whether it was a six and talking to his teammates, he was diagnosed with a concussion. Sri Lanka took the game to a Super Over but Australia won the encounter to take a 2-0 lead in the series. But, all eyes were on Smith. He was diagnosed with a concussion and Cricket Australia confirmed that Smith will be subject to low-level protocols.

Smith will miss the remainder of the Sri Lanka series. However, Australia has not named a replacement. Smith will take a week to recover, according to a statement in Cricket Australia. That means he will go for the Pakistan tour.

Steve Smith and his History of ConcussiOns

This was not the first time that Steve Smith has suffered from a concussion. In the 2019 Ashes Test against England at Lord’s, Smith was hit on the side of the neck by a 90-mph bouncer from Jofra Archer. Famously, it was the match that saw the first concussion substitute in Test cricket in the form of Marnus Labuschagne.

After his Lord’s travails in 2019, Smith missed the white-ball tour of England in 2020 after he was hit on the head in the nets at Old Trafford. In that same year, Steve Smith hit a century against India in Sydney but he almost missed the match as he complained of vertigo and vomiting. Later, it was attributed to ‘ear-rock’ crystals being formed in the ear.

Steve Smith tweeted his update which was reassuring for fans. “Thanks everyone for reaching out. My head has felt better but I will be ok,” Smith said. From Josh Hazlewood to Matthew Wade, players expressed their concern for Smith.

“When anyone dives and doesn’t get up straight away, there’s always a bit of concern. It’s good to see him walking around now and make his way off the field,” Hazlewood said. Smith’s incident comes in the wake of Will Pucovski suffering yet another concussion incident that ruled him out of a Shield match. Pucovski has been plagued by concussion issues and this has resulted in doubt over his future in the game.
