An absolutely blistering first-wicket partnership by South African openers Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan saw the Proteas win the second ODI against India at Paarl on Friday. With the win, the hosts have recorded victories in both the Test and ODI series against the men in blue. India batted first on the day and erected a score of 287-6. In reply, South Africa scored 288-3 in 48.1 overs and a lot of the credit goes to the 132-run partnership between de Kock and Malan.

INCREDIBLE OPENING STAND

After the defeat in the first match, fans expected a strong reply from KL Rahul’s men but that was just not meant to be. De Kock and Malan pretty much sealed the fate of India with their outstanding batting display. Malan was the highest run-scorer as he narrowly missed out on what would have been a fantastic ton. The opener scored 91 runs off 108 deliveries in a knock that included eight boundaries and one maximum.

De Kock was also not going to be left behind in terms of runs and he proved his mettle yet again. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 78 runs off just 66 deliveries, smashing seven boundaries and three maximums.

Skipper Temba Bavuma played a decent knock on the day as he scored 35 runs off 36 deliveries in a knock that included three boundaries. Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen remained unbeaten until the end to see their side home. They both scored 37 runs each.

There was not much to look at when it comes to the Indian bowling attack on the day. Ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah failed to live up to expectations as he could only bag a single wicket. He finished with figures of 1-37 after 10 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal and Shardul Thakur picked one wicket each as well.

PANT OUTSTANDING

Rishabh Pant continued his magnificent form in the tour of South Africa. After becoming the first keeper to hit a century in Tests in South Africa, Pant created another slice of history in Paarl. His 85, the highest by an Indian keeper in ODIs against South Africa, combined with KL Rahul’s 55 and a blitz of 40 from Shardul Thakur helped India reach 287/6 in the second ODI on Friday. South Africa took four hours to complete their quota of 50 overs, with the heat and humidity taking a toll. But, South Africa will be ruing the fact that they were poor in the field and lacked intensity.

Dhawan and Rahul were going at a good rate and the partnership raced past 60. The scoring rate was also near six. But, Aiden Markram broke the dangerous stand when Dhawan slog-swept to deep midwicket for 29.
