Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president has made a big admission regarding the status of the IPL 2021. In an interview to Sportstar, Ganguly has admitted that the resumption of IPL 2021 cannot happen in India. The reasons were because of the coronavirus restrictions and because of the 14-day hard quarantine. “There are lots of organisational hazards like 14-day quarantine. It can’t happen in India. This quarantine is tough to handle. Too early to say how we can find a slot to complete the IPL,” Ganguly said.

The coronavirus pandemic continued to cause havoc in India. On Sunday, there were 366,000 cases which took the active caseload to 22.6 million. The situation continued to grow grim every single day. The UAE could reportedly be the destination for IPL 2021. The 2021 ICC World T20 might also be played in the UAE as India continues to battle the coronavirus.

Window for IPL 2021?

With the IPL 2021 now postponed, it remains to be seen when it can be played in the next window. There is a small window after the end of the England tour until the start of the ICC World T20. But, the quarantine and venue allocation will be a major issue. India can even schedule the IPL after the end of the ICC World T20 in November. But, they have a bilateral series against New Zealand at that time which includes Tests and Twenty20 Internationals.

There are reports the tournament could be held in the United Kingdom after September. However, according to the Hampshire County Board director, it is ‘illegal’ to host the tournament under the current arrangements.

Before Ganguly, BCCI Treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal had told Reuters that if there’s any window available, the BCCI will try and see if we can complete the league. IPL 2021 was postponed indefinitely after members of the Chennai Super Kings team, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals team tested positive. After Wriddhiman Saha and Amit Mishra tested positive, the BCCI made the call to postpone the IPL indefinitely.
