Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the Gujarat Titans following the transfer of Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians ahead of the upcoming IPL auction. Gill has enjoyed an outstanding year, amassing 2118 runs from 45 matches across various formats, including seven centuries and 10 fifties. His remarkable average for the year stands at 50.42. Expressing his delight at the captaincy announcement, Gill stated, “I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team.
We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.” Gill has played a pivotal role in the success of Gujarat Titans since its introduction in the IPL. In the last season, he notably scored a 60-ball 129 against the Mumbai Indians, setting a record for the highest score by a batter in the IPL playoffs. This performance surpassed Virender Sehwag’s 122 for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) against Chennai Super Kings in 2014.

Gill’s innings also ranked as the third-highest score in a T20 playoffs game, trailing behind Chris Gayle’s 146 in 2017 and Tamim Iqbal’s 141 in 2019. In the previous IPL season, Gill achieved the feat of scoring three centuries, a performance only surpassed by Virat Kohli in 2016 and Jos Buttler in 2022, who each scored four centuries in a single IPL season.
